Episode 1, 2, 5, and 8: Tony Viola
Tony Viola was President of the Cleveland-based Realty Corporation of America, a real estate brokerage firm that had close to 150 team members. In 2008, Tony was one of 1,000 people indicted by a multi-jurisdictional Mortgage Fraud Task Force. Prosecutors Mark Bennett and Dan Kasaris accused Tony of orchestrating what they called the "Nation's Largest Mortgage Fraud Scheme" and said he stole $46 million dollars. Tony was found guilty on federal charges on April 1st, 2011. But that’s not the full story. Tony faced the same charges again on the state level. In 2012, from his jail cell, without legal representation, Tony uncovered evidence withheld by the Justice Department. This led to Tony being acquitted. He would have never been exonerated without the information provided by whistleblower, Dawn Pasela.
